Recently, I watched three films featuring Nana Patekar—Ab Tak Chhappan, Ab Tak Chhappan 2, and Shagird.
Nana Patekar was truly one of a kind. He was not only full of tremendous energy, but also possessed extraordinary acting ability. He did not merely act; he seemed to completely become the character he portrayed.
I recall the film Khamoshi, in which Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala also appeared, and Nana Patekar played the role of a deaf and mute father.
What a different imagination and experimentation on the part of the filmmaker!
A person so proficient and extraordinary in dialogue delivery was given the role of someone who could neither speak nor hear. Yet Nana conveyed everything through his face, his expressions, and body language in an extensive and outstanding manner.
Perhaps he could be called a born actor, a polished performer, or simply an actor par excellence. Whatever the description, he had the rare ability to leave an impression that was not easily forgotten.
Beyond acting, he was also known for being a good human being. His humane nature seemed to follow the ancient Indian philosophy of “Nara Seva, Narayan Seva”—service to humanity is service to God. Throughout his life, he remained connected to people at the grassroots level and continued to contribute to society in his own way.
There is an old saying, often associated with the wisdom of Buddha: “It is very easy to be difficult, but very difficult to be simple.” I am proud to say that India has produced such extraordinary people who choose to remain simple and humble while dedicating their lives to meaningful causes, society, and humanity.
Nana Patekar was, in many ways, extraordinary in his simplicity. Though known affectionately as “Nana,” he carried the stature of a king—not through wealth or glamour, but through his character, humanity, and contribution.
His rural roots remained an important part of his identity. Even after achieving great success in the Mumbai film industry, he continued to remain connected to his grassroots and to the simple values with which he began his journey.
Whether one calls it acting, philanthropy, or simply living with dignity, Nana Patekar leaves behind an impression that will not easily fade. His presence has touched people far beyond the boundaries of the film industry and across the length and breadth of the nation.
I never had the opportunity to meet Nana Patekar personally, but I have continued to learn from his lifestyle, his simplicity, and his philosophy of life. He showed that one can choose the difficult path, serve others, remain humble, and yet leave an extraordinary mark on the world.
Paying my heartfelt tribute to Nana Patekar.
Sincere condolences.
