Watching FIFA World Cup on TV has been a compulsory and passionate sports activity since 1986, Mexico World Cup. If I can recall correctly a match between France and Brazil, was termed as the last game played in most gentleman way in the last century.
But the match I am covering in this blog is altogether a different match, wherein the most favourite and defending champion football team, Argentina played against Egypt on 7/7/26 played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The irony was such that despite making repeated attack on the Goal-post of Egyptian team and with ball possession of more than 80% with Argentina, till 80th minutes of the match the defending champions were two goals down.
It was very difficult to watch round of 16 with your favourite team going to be ousted within next 10 minutes.
Not only the players, but the spectators present in the stadium and spectators, watching the match from all around the world were more or less shocked and had to have nerves of steel to see a potential defeat of their favourite Argentina team.
But there is an Old saying from the game of Boxing, you don’t get defeated after being thrown on the mat. When you refuse to rise up, you definitely are defeated.
And that makes a difference, how world champions behave, play and persist with perseverance to generate an outcome to snatch a match from the teeth full jaws of the opponent team.
Till 80 minutes of the gameplay, Egypt was lucky enough with their goalkeeper. Do not let pass the ball into the nets by preventing a penalty. Few headers & free kicks pass the goal post or were stopped by his vigilant and agile hands. But in last 10 minutes, everything changed as 2-0 score, became 2-1 then 2-2 and then 3-2.
It was a thrilling match where in every attack on either of the goal post, the palpitation was easily heard and blood pressure kept rising and going down while the brain cells in grey matter were just pumping and thumping in excitement and ecstasy. Worth watching a live match.
